What is a Termination of Pregnancy?

Is it Legal in Zimbabwe

Is it Legal in Zimbabwe?
A termination of pregnancy is also known as an abortion. It is when a pregnancy is ended by removing the embryo or foetus from the womb. This is either done by taking tablets that expel the embryo or it is done as a minor surgery by a doctor.

Any termination needs to be performed by a qualified medical person. However, some girls are too scared to go to the clinic and they ask unqualified people for help (to get a backstreet abortion) or even attempt to terminate a pregnancy at home using home remedies. This is extremely dangerous and can put a girl’s life in danger. Some girls die, others lose their womb or may not be able to have children in the future. If you become pregnant, do not go for a backstreet abortion, go to the closest health service or private clinic and ask advice about your options.

Is termination legal?
Legally, abortion is a crime in Zimbabwe, but there are exceptions that are provided for by law under which abortion can be permissible under The Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1977.

What are the conditions?

  1. When the life of the mother in danger.
  2. The child may suffer from permanent physical and/or mental disabilties.
  3. The pregnancy was a result of rape or incest.

Abortions can only be performed at a hospital with the written permission of the superintendent. In cases of rape or incest, a signed certificate from a magistrate and a police report are also required before an abortion can take place.

The abortion must be performed by a physician in a hospital with the consent of two other doctors, one of whom must be a specialist with expertise relating to the case. Private clinics, like Marie Stopes, can provide you with more advice.
